I get it, life can be overwhelming at the best of times. But we can all hit a roadblock where we feel like it is all too much. We don’t feel that we know the direction we want to take, our feelings can become confused, and maybe you just don’t feel your best physically and/or mentally. Getting to this stage often means that something has got to change, it may be a small thing, or it may be that you really need to overhaul your life. But sooner or later we realise that things need to change in order to make ourselves feel better and to give us that motivation to take the steps on the path we are suppose to take.
The problem is, like anything to do with yourself on a more personal level, it can be very difficult to know exactly what to do, what to change or how to go about it. In many cases people often don’t know what it is that is causing them to feel a little down and out. So if you don’t know how do you make the change? The truth is, deep down you will know what it is causing you to feel this way. It may be feeling out of breath when you climb the stairs, unsatisfied with your job when you get home from work, not feeling the love in your relationship anymore, or a combination of things causing you to feel this way. In some cases, a little hard think and time to yourself will help you identify the track you need to take.
Now that we are at the halfway stage of the year it now seems like no better opportunity than January the 1st to take on some of those changes. Maybe even revisit those new year resolutions and see if you did make any waves or contribute to change? Maybe they are still as relevant today as they were back then? But you can make the next six months of the year count. I wanted to share with you some of the things you could consider to help you on your way to changing your life for the better.
- Is it time to change your career? Let’s start with one of the obvious things that could be causing you doubt in your life. Your career. We spend a lot of time of our lives being at work. We are there for long hours in some cases, but the question to ask yourself would be do you enjoy it? Picture the scenario and figure out the emotions involved. It is Sunday evening, how do you feel? Are you full of dread for Monday morning, or are your excited about the prospect of another week? Many people hate Sundays because it is the end of the weekend, the time spent with family or close friends enjoying those days off. But, while everyone can hate a Sunday there is a difference between just feeling disheartened that the weekend is over and really dreading Monday morning coming around. Maybe it is time to address the career and make some changes?
The best place to start would be the job you do, do you love it but dislike who you are working for? Do you think you are due the next step in your career but feel there is no opportunity? Perhaps you don’t like the job you do but now have finally figured out where your strengths lie? Is it a case of taking on extra college classes to get the relevant skills and qualifications for a new career entirely? Is it time to go freelance or even set up your own business? Asking yourself these questions will help identify what it is you need to do to make the change to your career. Once you set upon the new journey and path you may find that you feel completely different about that Monday morning.
- Maybe you need to change your lifestyle? Your career is just one avenue you could change, and while it may not be the problem perhaps looking at your lifestyle could identify where you have some issues. Burning the candle at both ends may not be wise, and perhaps once in a while you can handle it, but are your continuous abusing your body? Maybe you are out drinking every night? Not getting enough sleep perhaps? Binge eating all of the junk and sugary snacks or just endless watching TV. While all of the above in moderation isn’t bad for you as such, continually doing this and living this sort of lifestyle can be a big factor to how you feel right now. Alcohol and drinking excessively is one of the the things that can affect how you feel. It is a stimulant, so it can keep you up at night, cause you to feel anxiety and symptoms of depression and definitely can make you feel that you rely on it to perhaps relax. Giving it up could be the detox your body needs to feel rejuvenated once more. A quick look online will help you find out how long alcohol withdrawal lasts so that you can be prepared for some of the aftermath giving up alcohol could have you face. If it isn’t just alcohol you rely on, then maybe you might want to look at how you spend your time. Your lifestyle is a mixture of different factors that affect how you feel. Which brings me to my next point.
- Could your diet help you feel better? Binge eating, having a diet filled with junk and sugary snacks, eating too much or not eating enough, any of these sound familiar to you? If you have a bad relationship with food then this could be a big factor to how you currently feel. In truth, your body needs food to function. We need to eat a balanced diet full of all the vitamins and nutrients are body needs to function. Denying your body certain foods, and indulging in others can go on to cause major issues like weight gain, high blood pressure or other issues such as diabetes. Your health is not a laughing matter.
If you think that you might have a bad relationship with food go back to basics. Eating an arrays of food groups, getting good proteins, carbohydrates and eating a mixture of fruit and vegetables. You don’t need to go on any extreme diets as just eating a healthy balanced on will be more than enough. Maybe you want to consider a lifestyle change ot do with your diet, perhaps embracing a vegetarian, pescatarian or vegan diet maybe? You could even look into other aspects of food intolerance that could be causing you to feel bad such as being dairy free or eating gluten free foods.
- Working on your fitness could help improve matters. Maybe you could work on your fitness levels to feel better. If you eat well, love your career and feel like you do take care of yourself, then perhaps exercise is the answer. We can often find that there are warning signs that we are not as active as we should be. Running up the stairs only to feel our hearts racing as we gasp for breath. Not walking or taking regular exercise isn’t any good for us at all. So maybe this is the change that you need to make. The biggest excuse people have when it comes to exercise is stating they have no time for it. The perception is that you need to be in the gym every night but this is far from the truth. Your fitness can be improved just by you making the decision to be more active. Choosing to walk somewhere instead of driving, an at home workout you can do after work, going out for a run before working, these are decisions you can easily take and make the time for to be more active.
- Take a long hard look at the relationships in your life. Maybe there is nothing wrong with how you spend your time. Perhaps you eat well, you exercise a lot and every aspect of your life is good, but you still have that sinking feeling something isn’t right. This is when you may need to start looking at who you are spending your time with and analyse your relationships. It could be the person you are in love with, or maybe it is the friends you spend most of your time with. You need to work out how these people make you feel. Some people are naturally negative, and often this can clash with others who don’t share the same philosophy. But before anyone realises it, negative people can zap you of how you feel and make you feel down and out. It is best to surround yourself with people that lift you up, make you feel good and support you. This might be your romantic partner and your relationship could have ran its course, or maybe it is just the firend syou spend itme with, but revalustauing these relationships could help you on your way to feeling better.
I hope that this has given you something to think about when it comes to changing your life and how you feel for the rest of the year ahead.
