In many ways, being a father is an abundance of professional tasks. When you work at home, or you run a business, these working tasks can spill over into your home life. But rather than telling your child to stay away from the work, is it time to involve them in some way? The fact of the matter is your child will need to learn, at some point, valuable life skills that they can take into their careers. So what can you teach your child when they’re at home, and you are working right there?
- Time Management. Time management is a crucial skill we all have to learn, and now, with the focus being on working smart instead of working hard, this is a very valuable lesson that we can teach our children. And when they’re old enough, they can sit with you, and help you to manage your own activities. This works to give you your work life a structure, but it also gives them the perspective of what it is you need to do, and how much work it actually is. Time management is something you can practice together, and these are things that can help them as they get older to tackle their homework in a certain way or structure their week so they have time for friends and family.
- Problem-Solving. Because our children can feel inadequate or stressed out because of an issue they have no control over, problem-solving skills become something they learn from you. And so, whether it’s finding the best VPS hosting for your home network, or it’s about tackling a problem that’s come up at the last possible minute, by having an action plan of how to break down a problem into manageable components, this is what will help give your child the tools to tackle anything that comes up in the future. Because our children will run into personal problems constantly throughout their school lives, having a mindset to tackle these problems means that they will forever have an optimistic approach. So if you don’t have the skills, you should learn them as well!
- Understanding The Difference Between Work And Life. Sometimes we teach our children the things that we should really listen to ourselves. What’s important is, when you are working from home, that you balance your work and your life. They can forever bleed into one another, and if your child sees their father slipping into work mode, we can learn from them and actually embrace playtime. But, we have to develop a fine balance. Our children want to hang around with us, and it’s important for us to teach them life skills, but at the same time, we’ve still got to remember that it’s not all about work.
When we work at home, we are able to spend a lot more time with our children, but it may not be to the quality that we want. So by getting them involved in our work, we can help to teach them some suitable life skills. But also, it means we’ve got a lot more quality time with them, therefore nurturing a special bond. But don’t forget dads, go outside and play!
